Why Do You Need German Public Health Insurance?
Health insurance is required for anyone living in Germany, so it should be one of the top priorities for anyone moving there. You have two kinds to choose from: German public health insurance and German private health insurance.
Many people, however, sign up with the first plan they see. Consequently, this leads to many people overpaying, not getting the correct coverage, or not understanding their coverage. We want to make sure thats not you!
In some cases private health insurance is a better option. You are eligible for private health insurance if you are self employed, a civil servant, earn above the salary threshold (60,750/yr), or have no basis to join into state sponsored insurance.
How Much Does German Public Health Insurance Cost?
German public health insurance costs depend on the type of coverage you have and your income. Generally you can expect to pay between 180€ (lower income) and 800€ (higher income).
In 2017 the German state healthcare contribution was 14.6%. Normally your employer pays for half of this cost and you pay for the remaining half (7.3%). This payment is deducted directly from your paycheck.
Your healthcare cost would be around 150€ if you are making 2000€ per month. It is important to note that there is an income cap of 4350€ per month. In other words, this means that your healthcare cost will not be deducted from any income you make above 4350€ per month.
